Details: DEFRA – Assessing Biomass to Chemicals (ABC) Project

The ABC Project is funded by DEFRA and managed by the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC), based in Wilton, to carry out research into the commercial viability of producing chemicals from biomass. Industry sponsors include Akzo-Nobel, Growhow, Scott Bader, Jacobs Engineering, Graphite Resources and Link2Energy, with the University of Surrey developing a modelling platform to evaluate and optimize possible process routes.

JCD is providing the bulk of the key process technology data for the project, having already provided some 10 process packages to date. JCD are also providing a general process engineering resource to the project, including support to aid the software modelling work being carried out by Surrey University.

Each package is an independent study, consisting of a basic process definition, process flow diagram, heat and mass balance and energy balance. While some of the packages cover established technology, some use proprietary processes for which there is little published information. The development of the latter packages, together with process schemes developed by JCD specifically for the project, draw on our extensive R&D experience in process development and in process modelling.
