Details: Model of Product Heating in a Furnace

A major catalyst manufacturer was researching possible modified manufacturing methods for one of their key products. Initial laboratory trials had shown promising results, and full scale manufacturing trials were planned. A key step in the manufacturing process required heating of the catalyst material on a supported bed within a furnace. To help them understand the likely temperature history of the material as it was heated, a simple dynamic model of the system was created, modelling the heat transfer within the bed of material. The software predicted the temperature history within the bed as a function of time, allowing for a user specified heating profile, and changes in materials, size of catalyst, and the type of bed support material used. An example temperature profile is given below, which shows the lag of the temperature in the centre of the bed as it responds to the imposed furnace temperature though the heating and cooling cycle.
